Last-placed Wolverhampton stunned Premier League champions Liverpool with a 2-1 win at Molineux Stadium on Tuesday.

Brazilian midfielder Andre scored a deflected winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time to deal a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of securing Champions League football next season.

This sent Wolves fans into a thrilling finish to the match.

“This is Liverpool Football Club. It doesn’t matter what position we are in at the moment, whenever you beat them, you have to enjoy their moments,” said Wolves manager Rob Edwards, who charged the touchline in celebration after Andre’s strike, bringing rare joy to a season that seemed destined to end in relegation.

The game ended in a dramatic finish with Mohamed Salah scoring in the 83rd minute – which ended his 10-game league goal drought – before Rodrigo Gomes equalized for Liverpool shortly after to put Wolves ahead in the 78th minute.

As both teams went in search of a winner, Andre’s long-range effort deflected off Joe Gomez and missed Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Rodrigo Gomes said, “It feels amazing. It was an amazing game and an amazing night.”

It was Liverpool’s ninth league defeat of the season and the defending champions could drop to sixth if Chelsea beats Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The top four are guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League, but the Premier League is likely to get a fifth bonus place due to the performance of English clubs in Europe this season.

After winning the title last time, Liverpool is 16 points behind first-placed Arsenal.

“We are losing a lot of football games and losing points,” said Liverpool manager Arne Slott. “The three times we’ve lost in the last 22 games, they’ve all been in extra time.”

Wolves’ victory marked two consecutive wins in the league for the first time this season. They beat Aston Villa 2-0 on Friday.

While survival is highly unlikely given that it is 11 points adrift of safety, it is enjoying a late-season surge including a recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

“What we’re doing right now is showing fight, spirit and some quality. We’re competing with everyone,” Edwards said.

Everton secured a rare win in their new stadium by beating relegation-fighting Burnley 2–0.

Goals from James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in each half ensured only the fifth league win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium since Everton moved to their new home at the start of the season. The win also boosted their chances of qualifying for Europe, moving David Moyes’ side to within a point of seventh-placed Brentford, who drew 0–0 with Bournemouth.

“Our form abroad has been incredible but we haven’t got enough points here,” Tarkowski said. “We have let ourselves down in some games here and conceded some useless goals and not taken our chances.

“We are very close to the European places. There are still nine matches left so we will put some wins on the board and see where we end up. We are chasing them rather than looking down.”

Leeds are in danger of being dragged back towards the relegation zone after two consecutive defeats.

Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty gave Sunderland a 1–0 win at Elland Road.

Leeds are six points above the drop zone, but that could be eased if 18th-placed West Ham picks up points at Fulham on Wednesday.

Port Vale, who sit last in England’s third division, will play Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round after beating Bristol City 1-0 in extra time.

Ben Wein scored the winning goal in the 112th to beat Bristol, which is 10th in the second-tier Championship.
